Where Is All the Magic?

‘Tis the season for magic and wonder, or is it?

The way people act you would think we were all possessed.

Some Back Story

Magic who doesn't love magic? There is a reason that we watch magicians and they don't reveal their secrets to us. Magic is fun and whimsical, it brings out the inner child in us all.

The holiday season is fast approaching with the USA Thanksgiving Day followed by Black Friday and Cyber Monday we are getting into the swing of the winter holiday season. whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or something else entirely you have to admit there is something special about this time of year.

Trying to keep the spirit alive of Christmas alive through the magic of Santa with my kids has become quite the chore as my oldest nears his teenage years. My youngest being autistic has a different meaning for Christmas for him beyond Santa and presents. My oldest started to pick up on the idea that Santa may not be who he thought he was for a few years now. Eventually, the cat would be out of the bag.

Well, it happened the cat came out of the bag and there was some crying involved. Now it is time to try to keep that magic for him while maintaining the magic for the youngest child. How do you keep a fantastic illusion going once the veil is lifted and the truth revealed?

Keeping the Magic Alive

Once we lift the veil and make the reveal how do you go about keeping the magic alive? Hard work, and creativity.

As magicians of customer service, it is up to us to keep hope and the magic alive through the holidays for people. As our clients are feeling rushed and stressed out it is up to us to make sure they have an enjoyable experience as tough as this may be at times.

The demands we, in North America at least, put on ourselves to make sure we a flawless Christmas is pretty crazy scary. We border on perfectionism and megalomania. Once we turn the consumer brain into full throttle come Black Friday we let our baser instincts from our hunter/gatherer days take over and we become animals.

We are vicious and mean. Tearing at each other to get that last Tickle Me Elmo, or New hot video game system. We will punch, claw, trample, and pepper spray our way into getting what we want to make our families happy. This is crazy! Luckily we have calmed down to a somewhat normal level for all our sakes.

It did take some creative ideas, and rules to make sure this didn't happen; oh and some common sense like ordering enough inventory. If in the event we don't have enough or people are just pressed for time and are rude to you as the representative of the store don't take it personally, and check to make sure when you are on the consumer side you aren't acting the same way.

Just because you get treated badly doesn't give you the right to treat others badly. As a consumer, you still have an obligation to society to treat others the way you yourself would like to be treated. Decency and politeness still can go a long way even during our most magical and hectic time of year. With all the crazy hustle and bustle around us stepping out and being the exceptional person in the crowd is better than being part of the masses.

So keeping the magic as you can see would be pretty difficult in all this for anyone. Good is hard! To be the one who stands out and keeps the magic of the season alive for yourself and others it pays to have a positive attitude even when others don't. It's better to be a little more cheerful and smiling so people can see that it is good around them and people trying to help out.

Two key elements you should work on is your level of Empathy and Patience.

Empathy

noun

the ability to understand and share the feelings of another

Patience

noun

the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.

Just as friendly reminders I provided the definitions so you can keep them front and centre.

If you can cultivate next level empathy and patience you for this time of year I will have no doubts that you will have kept the magic alive and well for everybody you come in contact with this season, and you will feel like a superhero knowing that you made a difference in people's lives whether they say something or not.

Because you may not hear it a lot or at all this season from other people such as customers, employees, employers, coworkers, or service agents I am going to tell you what you need to hear.

I am really proud of you, and thankful for everything you are doing to keep the magic alive in all of us this holiday season.

Thank for your time today to read my article. I have tons of appreciation for you taking some time out of your schedule as I know it isn't always easy.
