Not As I Do!

Do as I say instead!!

Some Back Story

Do we even need a back story about this? It seems like we all have a story about this somewhere along the line. We've all worked with a manager or supervisor who would tell you do one thing; however, they would do the exact opposite of that thing.

As a parent, it is easy to fall into this trap of telling them to do one thing, and doing something different from your words. As an example telling my kids not to yell by yelling at them to not yell!! What the heck, right? Talk about sending conflicting messages.

It's like this one place I used to work at. It seemed like the management would say one thing but do the complete opposite of what was told of us. The most startling contrast to this was scheduling. We all had to be in by a certain time, and ready; however management would roll in whenever they felt it was ok, or if they were running behind they expected us to notify the office, yet we were not offered the courtesy. The same worked at the end of the day as well.

As you can imagine it makes for a difficult time to know what you are to do with the conflicting information being given you.

Do As I Do

This is how you set an example. Did you know that the majority of people take their cues, and lessons from observation of those in a higher rank than them? Yes, that's correct you are the example you are setting. If you are going to ask people to do something you first have to show them how it is done and set the president on the subject.

If you aren't willing to be the one to go first and start showing people how to things are to be then you aren't going to have much luck with people doing what you ask later on.

A lot of people are willing to tell people what to do as it is easier than showing them how or what to do or even why it is important.

So Why Should I Set the Example?

It's called integrity!

You should do what you're asking of people whether you are in front of others or when no one is looking. You'll bigger and better than ever as you are building yourself up to be the example you are wanting to set for others. If you consider yourself to be a leader or a mentor of any value and you want others to follow you than you have to put in the work to make sure you are worthy of following.

in-teg-ri-ty

noun

1.the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness
2. the state of being whole and undivided

With the number of people, we have to choose to be role models we should be looking into ourselves to be seeing if we are being good role models for those in our lives. There is nothing like being a role model for others; especially when we have a lack of really good role models in the world right now.

With rockstars, athletes, and politicians all coming up short and being named and caught in scandals we are in desperate need of people to step up and be the solution.

When we realize the people we look up to are not what they portray to the public, and our image of them is shattered what do we do next?

We look closer to ourselves for someone who can show how to go about life. Leaders and mentors, and role models that are either in our companies, jobs, family, church or other organizations we may be a part of are the ones to be setting the correct example for us to follow. If they want you to work harder or longer they need to show us that they have that same commitment.

If we are observational learners, and we are teaching others through our actions what are we showing others? Do you feel confident in your actions? Is what you say and do congruent with what you say and do with others around and no one around?

I truly hope your answers to those questions are yes. I know mine is working towards a very solid yes. It is taking time and effort because doing good is hard, and I want to be setting the best example I can for those around me, especially people at work, and my kids.

Who do you need to be making sure you are setting the example for? Who needs you to model the behaviour you expect in others?
