Taking Control

Your life can easily spin out of control if you don't step up to your leadership level and take control of where you are headed. You are the Captain and Navigator.

Some Back Story

Back in the time when I was working with a financial distribution service company I was known as the "King of Wing."

Yup, that's right. I winged a lot of what I was doing and I still do in a lot of cases. I never saw the need to plan and structure my life and time. As I have grown and wizened up I see more and more that you can't just wing it and hope for the best.

I have always kind of enjoyed my life being free and flowing, and it always suited the life I was living and it suited me well. Being a fairly new dad at that time as well it really seemed like the best idea at the time. What better thing than letting your life ebb and flow like a river?

Well, to obtain my goals and dreams in life there are a lot better ways to live life.

Structure and Flow

Can you have a structure with Flow? Yes.

Of course, you can have structure and flow. Just like the river ebbing and flowing it still has structure and guidance for where it is to move. If the river didn't have banks the water would just go wherever it felt like without any recourse.

This is why I talk about goals and managing tasks so much. It's not always to help you the reader out so much as something I often need to hear myself as well. yes, I need to hear it often as well so I can keep my goals and ambitions alive and well. If I don't talk about what I need in a way that can be related in lessons to you I may not learn what I need as well.

I heard once the best way to learn something is to teach it. Hence why I am trying to give you the best information I can. So I Can help you and myself learn these important lessons.

Back to the point at hand here. With creating the best life for yourself you need to present within the moment. This will help you create a focus on the tasks and immediate goals at hand. Which will make you more productive and happier as you knock things off your lists. Will you be perfect at this? No, of course not and no one is expecting perfection only excellence. Doing your best at any given moment is all you can ask of yourself and others.

But Master Yoda says I should be mindful of the future.

- Obi-Wan

But not at the expense of the moment.

- Qui-Gon Jinn

With being ever-present in the moment you also have to have a clear plan for your future and set out steps and milestones along the way to make sure you can obtain the life and future you are aiming for. You don't want to dwell in the future as this can cause panic and anxiety. Set a future goal and take steps, no matter how small, each day to obtain that goal. What is your purpose and what are you doing to obtain it?

Insanity Is Doing the Same Thing Over and Over Again and Expecting Different Results.

- Often quoted as Albert Einstein

The above quote is misleading. It should be "Insanity is doing the same mistake over and over again not learning from it." That is really how the quote should go because if you are doing the right things and practicing your craft and learning you should be doing it over and over again and seeing improved results.

Navigating our lives does take some looking back reflecting on the past, not living in the past. When living in the past we cause depression and self-loathing, and we never progress. If we can reflect on the past and pull lessons learned to help our present circumstances then we are using the past to make our present better. You can kind of think of it a bit as a treasure map that you've found. Someone else has mapped out the route previously and you just have to follow it now. It's not a great visual, and there is a little more figuring out for yourself as to the learning opportunities but it gives you an idea as to how it could be used.

In conclusion, use the past as a map to solve present problems, and plan the future so you know what you have to do in the present, and be mindful of the moment you are in so you can do your best work and live your life to your greatest potential.

What lessons have you learned from your past? What plans have you set into motion for your future? Are you struggling with focusing on the present, or do you have tactics to help you with that? I would love to hear from you, comment below.
