HABITS!!

What habits are you developing? Are they positive or negative habits?

Some Back Story

Not too sure how much back story I have here honestly. I had a difficult time building habit and keeping them.

This blog, for instance, has become a habit for me and now I need to do it every Monday.

One habit I did have and I am having a difficult time getting back into is waking up at 5 am to go for walks or exercise a little bit before getting the day started. This was an awesome habit I did have and I have some amazing shots of the sunrise over the beach.

The waking early one was great I got a lot done before the rest of my family or even friends were awake and not I struggle to be up before 6 am.

What does it mean to have a Habit?

A habit takes time to form whether it is a good habit or a bad habit. The science is in and takes on average 66 days to form a new habit.

Some habits take no time at all to develop and others can take a lifetime to create. Habits aren't easy to develop. Oddly though bad habits seem really easy to fit in to anywhere and anytime, and really insanely easy to develop. Maybe it's the dopamine hits we get from the bad habits.

Our sense of instant gratification isn't an easy thing to overcome as it has become ingrained in us as a habit as well. I guess it is more than just a habit so much as it is an addiction to getting things right away. Who doesn't like opening the packages from Amazon before we are even in the car to see what we may have received.

Creating good habits, however, takes time and planning. However long it may have taken to develop the bad habit easily 10X it and that is how long it could take to overwrite the existing habit. If you are trying to create a new habit where there is no habit... well that probably isn't the case.

If you are creating a new good habit you are most likely trying to overwrite a bad habit so whatever it is that you are wanting to create a habit for you should take a look at the opposite of your new habit goal and see what it is that you are currently doing that is in contradiction to your habit directive and start removing the components of the badness so you can start applying the goodness.

It's like acronym WWSD (What Would Superman Do?). Ok, I know that isn't normally how it is said, but I like Superman. So if you are doing something that doesn't fit your goals you should ask "What Would Superman Do?" to make sure you are going down the proper path. If it is an unhealthy habit stop it and do a healthy habit instead. No matter how tasty McDonald's and Taco Bell are they are not a good choice for food where homemade chicken and veggies are the better choices.

The same goes for business and work as well. Look at what you are doing and see if it makes sense and fits the grand plan of a healthy work/business habit to advance your career and goals. If it isn't then it's time to reassess and put the good habits in place with planning and scheduling.
