Doing anything good will take a long time. Like they say good guys finish last; however the good finish stronger than the bad.
Some Back Story
As I was watching the animated film Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam the main character Billy Batson said, "'Be good, and good will follow.' That's what my parents always used to tell me. But you know, Mr. Kent, I was good before they were taken from me, I was good at the foster home, and I was good about fifteen minutes ago! I'm starting to think being good isn't good for me..."
"It seems that way sometimes, doesn't it? But that's why good is hard. Bad is always easy," replied Clark Kent.
This conversation over breakfast really sums up life doesn't it? The first time I heard this conversation it put me on to a train of thought on how to be good, and what good looks like, and the role models to look to for that goodness.
Why Should I Be Good When Bad is so Easy?
You know that's a really good question with no easy answer. Being good can be really difficult for sure, and bad can be really easy; however there are no good short cuts to get what you want.
You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.
- Zig Ziglar
Being good can be any number of things, and means different things to different people. For some doing good is a big extravagant event such as building schools, orphanages, or churches in third world countries. For some it can be as small as picking up some trash from the street. For others, and probably most, it falls somewhere in the middle of these things.
Being good, any amount of good, is difficult to do, and maintain. There is an old First Nations legend about two wolves who live within us, one evil and one good, and it all depends on which one you feed to how you become. Being good is a decision, and with all decisions they must be maintained once acted upon. The caveat here is that if you are making bad decisions you need to learn from them quickly, and move on.
So why would one want to be good if it isn't easy? Well no one said doing anything good was going to be easy, and most importantly you grow more from good than bad. The more good you put out into the world the more you will receive in return it is all a matter of time. How much time? No idea, sorry. Actually I'm not sorry as getting there is part of the excitement of being a good person. The old saying goes good guys finish last;however there is more to it than that. Good guys finish last, but they finish stronger.
To figure out if something you are going to do is good or bad all you have to do it ask one simple question. Who is going to benefit from this first? If your answer is you than perhaps re-exam what you are about to do. If your answer is others than you are on the right track. I know some people are going to maybe say something like, "but Rob you're writing this to be make money and be famous." To that I say no. As of this writing I have not made a single penny, and have asked for nothing in return; all I am getting is a clear soul as I'm sharing my knowledge with everyone the best I can at this moment.
Speaking of moments each moment you may have to be something different to each person. Now I know what your thinking, isn't that being two faced? The answer is no as you aren't talking behind people's backs you are merely having to adapt to others and their needs of you. Once again this is not easy; however it will be worth it. The power is adaptability and it will more than return you in good will. The thing here is as well is you still need to be, the best you as you can't be a different person you only have to adapt to the situation and the person and what they need. If you're an asshole you have some work to do, and don't worry we will help you work through that as well.
Be good, and good will follow.
